Indiana Department of Education issues "no letter grade" for performance-based report cards

Indiana schools will replace the A-F grading scale in lieu of performance based report cards. 

In an effort towards school transparency, the House Enrolled Act 1591 requires public and private schools to post their "report cards" on their school's website by October 15, 2023.

The "report cards" format is based on the Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed (GPS) metrics aiming towards academic mastery, career readiness and work ethic. 

This change aims to counter the low I Read-3 and I-LEARN testing scores for elementary students as well as monitor high school students' SAT scores and graduation rates. 

"The report card will provide key data points for parents, families, and communities to better understand the work happening in our schools."

An elementary student's report card will contain the following information: 

• Pass rate for I READ-3 (third grade)

• Pass rate for ILEARN English Language Arts (ELA) and math (third-eighth grade)

• Absences

• Per student funding

A high school student's report card will contain the following information: 

• Average composite SAT score

• Graduation rate

• Non waiver graduation rate

• The student's percentage of being enrolled in or passed

  • Advanced Placement exam

  • International Baccalaureate exam

  • Duel credit course

  • Cambridge International exam

• Per student funding
